Meet the Big John Trimble's
East Coast Opry Performers
In
November 1955, Carl Perkins recorded "Blue Suede
Shoes," Elvis was signed to RCA Victor, rock and
roll music was becoming popular on mainstream radio,
and Joseph "J.J." Brown was
born.
During childhood, young J.J.
sang tunes he heard on the radio for his family and
friends. He and his brother Jeff often sang Beatles
songs and sang in the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Youth
Choir.
As the 1970s began, a nostalgic
trend toward early rock and roll caught on. In 1974,
when "Happy Days" debuted on television,
"J.J. and The Joint Jumpers" started appearing
at local high school talent shows and performed 1950s
and 60s oldies.
Early in the 1980s, J.J.
sang on night club shows which featured such bands as
The Good Guys, The Bop Cats, Shake and The Drakes and
Mantra. Although he enjoyed some local success, he soon
tired of the club scene and spent the rest of the decade
singing in church.
The popularity of karaoke
brought J.J. back to singing rock and roll in 1991.
After winning some of the area's karaoke contests, he
appeared on the syndicated cable TV show, "Karaoke
America" in 1992.
J.J. Brown first appeared
on the East Coast Opry in the fall of 2002. He auditioned
shortly after calling in to Jean Trimble's "Lost
in the 50s" radio program to sing part of an Elvis
song which another listener had requested. Since then,
he has sung many times on this radio program and on
the Opry shows.
"I've sung in night
clubs, churches, senior homes and in jails. Whether
it's secular or sacred music, I believe that music is
a gift from God that makes people happy."
